- A Name You Can Trust – More doctors and hospitals recommend Saebo products for stroke rehabilitation than any other brand.
- Backed by Research – To maximize recovery following a stroke (or other neurological injury), doctors understand the critical importance of “grasp and release” hand exercises. As the saying goes: “Use it or loose it”. Using your hand throughout the day and during high-repetition therapy sessions builds new connections in the brain (cortical plasticity) and offsets the negative impacts of neglect (atrophy and spasticty) which can lead to a painful and useless “claw-fist.”Read about exciting new research featuring the SaeboGlove here

Gravity Compensation. Unweight the arm and regain independence.
Introducing the SaeboMAS
The SaeboMAS is a dynamic mobile arm support system designed to facilitate and challenge the weakened shoulder and elbow during functional tasks.
What is the SaeboMAS?
The SaeboMAS dynamic mobile arm support system is a zero-gravity upper extremity device specifically designed to assist and challenge the weakened shoulder and elbow during functional tasks and repetitive exercise drills. Patients suffering from arm weakness resulting from neurological or orthopedic conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or shoulder subluxation can benefit from the much-needed support and facilitation. The SaeboMAS picks up where old, traditional arm supports have left off and brings mobile arm supports into the age of technology.
- Gravity-supported, weight-supported, zero-gravity, and gravity-compensated are synonymous. It means counteracting the effects of gravity while facilitating and promoting functional movement
- Unloading or ‘resting’ the arm substantially decreases the training load. It improves independence during daily living tasks and may also increase motor recovery by relearning normal movement patterns. Performing exercises and self-care tasks, such as eating or drinking, with minimal compensation are just a few of the activities patients will be able to perform with Saebo’s unweighting technology.
- Patients with proximal weakness (affecting muscles closest to the body’s midline) can now participate in proven treatment techniques, such as task-oriented activities that would have been difficult or impossible otherwise. The SaeboMAS allows them to maximize independence with self-care and leisure tasks.

FAQs
What is the SaeboMAS?
The SaeboMAS is a dynamic, zero-gravity mobile arm support system designed to assist and challenge the affected shoulder and elbow during functional tasks. This device is primarily used for neurological and orthopedic patients who exhibit shoulder and elbow weakness or shoulder subluxation.
How does the SaeboMAS work?
The device uses an adjustable spring system to assist the patient’s arm during tasks. The spring system allows the arm to be facilitated throughout all planes of movement and can be used while sitting, standing, or lying down. Tension adjustments can be made so the patient can effectively incorporate their arm during functional activities. As the patient improves proximal strength (the ability to hold their shoulder or arm without assistance), the spring support decreases to challenge them at the appropriate level further.
Can the SaeboMAS be used in the home environment?
Yes. Although many hospitals and clinics use the SaeboMAS for patient care, the device was also designed for home use. The SaeboMAS includes a portable table mount that can be secured to most tables. Using this device at home can help individuals maximize their ability to perform their self-care needs and improve their quality of life.
What are the differences between the SaeboMAS and the SaeboMAS mini?
The SaeboMAS is designed primarily for use in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and private clinics. The SaeboMAS mini is a portable and compact version of the standard SaeboMASand is more appropriate for home therapy and pediatric rehabilitation.
How does it work?
- Following a neurological or orthopedic injury, it is common for clients to experience impaired arm and hand function, resulting in decreased strength, coordination, and range of motion. Clients often cannot support or move their arm to perform exercises necessary for proper recovery.
- If the arm has limited use, it may lead to impaired communication to the brain, further limiting function and movement following a neurological injury, such as a stroke.
- Unfortunately, most clients do not receive enough range of motion exercises – either during therapy or at home – to retrain the brain and gain a functional range of motion. The lack of movement may also lead to increased pain and joint problems, further decreasing the potential for proper arm recovery. For this reason, the SaeboMAS is the perfect solution to add to the recovery toolbox.
- The SaeboMAS is a dynamic, zero-gravity mobile arm support system. In other words, the SaeboMAS removes gravity, so the client’s arm is unweighted, allowing for improved movement and function. By using the SaeboMAS to support the arm, clients can perform exercises to strengthen the weakened shoulder and elbow. This support allows the patient to perform highly repetitive exercises and functional tasks that would otherwise be impossible.
- Since the SaeboMAS supports the arm during functional tasks and exercises, it reduces the amount of hand-over-hand assistance the therapist or caregiver must provide.
- The SaeboMAS is fully adjustable, offering different levels of assistance depending on how much support the patient may need. The tension can be adjusted by simply turning a knob. This feature is very helpful as the patient’s recovery may sometimes vary.
- The SaeboMAS has an easily visible graded tension scale that allows the therapist and/or patient to track and measure progress.
- The height-adjustable system allows patients to perform exercises and tasks in many directions and planes
- The comfortable and bendable forearm support enables you to custom-fit each client, and a removable liner for proper infection control.
There are two models of the SaeboMAS to fit a variety of needs:
- The SaeboMAS Clinic is a larger MAS with a mobile base. It is portable and can be used while the patient is sitting, standing, or lying down. This unit may be more beneficial in a clinical setting to allow for easy transport throughout the clinic.
- The SaeboMAS mini is a smaller MAS that is mounted on the table and beneficial for patients who have less space to perform their exercises and activities.
How do I know it is right for me (or my patient)?
The SaeboMAS is designed for individuals who have had injuries resulting in:
- Limited arm movement and function
- Shoulder weakness and/or pain in the shoulder joint
- Shoulder subluxation
- Shoulder instability
- Arm weakness, fatigue and/or pain
Some diagnoses that may benefit from use of theSaeboMASinclude but are not limited to:
- Stroke
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Spinal cord injury
- MS
- Guillain-Barre
- ALS
- Brachial plexus injuries
- Cerebral Palsy
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Shoulder injuries
- Elbow injuries
The onset of the injury does not prevent someone from receiving Saebo treatment. Whether the client has just experienced a stroke or orthopedic injury, or if they suffered an injury years ago, the SaeboMAS can be of great benefit.
Is a licensed therapist required to provide the SaeboMAS to clients?
No. You do not need a therapist to order the SaeboMAS. If you are purchasing for home use, we recommend theSaeboMAS mini.
What can I (or my patient) expect?
- Because of the zero-gravity technology, once the client is positioned in the SaeboMAS they will immediately notice their arm feels less heavy and their movement more controlled.
- With a weightless arm, the client will experience less fatigue and require fewer rest breaks during exercises.
- When the arm is unweighted, less effort and exertion are needed, resulting in decreased spasticity in the hand. This may be important when attempting to perform self-care tasks involving the affected hand.
- Like all medical treatments, the level of recovery cannot be guaranteed; however, clients who are motivated and compliant with the daily home program tend to have better outcomes.
Questions/comments for the client:
- How are you spending your day training your arm and hand?
- Are you moving/exercising your arm/shoulder enough?
- Do you have to rely on someone else to exercise your arm?
- Are you limited to only performing important exercises while at therapy?
